Response to Lead Blog Post #10
I remember one night after an outing with my friends, we were all sitting in my basement watching TV looking for something to watch. While flipping through the channels, Superbad comes on. The movie was already partway through, and we so happened to stumble upon the scene where Fogel tries to buy alcohol at the gas station. As my friends have already seen the movie, they insisted to keep it on and watch through this scene, as they claimed it was really funny. Myself, having never seen it before, decided to go along with what they said. While watching the scene, I was overwhelmed by how funny it was. We watched that whole scene until my friend took the remote and changed the channel, and that was that. I have never seen Superbad fully but was reminded by Faith's blog by how good the movie is and how I have wanted to watch it. The incongruity theory is heavily present in this movie, specifically the gas station scene. The combination Fogel's lack of confidence with the horrible fake ID and the cops' obliviousness to the whole situation brews relief humor. Firstly, the cops approach the situation of describing the robber horribly, demonstrating some benign violation. Secondly, the interaction between the cops and Fogel is very tense at first, as the viewers are scared that Fogel will get caught, but thanks to the stupidity of the cops, everything turns out alright. Another funny scene is the drawing dicks scene, where Seth talks about where he used to draw dicks all the time. It is a great example of benign violation because it is borderline inappropriate but based off of Seth's explanation, seems like a normal occurrence. He mentions that it happens to 8% of kids. Additionally, the situation of how he gets caught and what happens to him after is so absurd you can't help but laugh. Superbad is a great movie brimming with humor and I can't wait to watch it again.
