Vine was a wonderful thing. It has given us iconic masterpieces such as "I Love You Bitch," "Bad Bois," "What the Fuck Kyle," and countless others that have defined our generation and provided countless memes. Rest in peace vine. While vine was not super popular when it was still alive, its untimely demise made its popularity soar. Almost overnight, people all over twitter starting posting vine after vine to commemorate what it once was. Vines became integrated into everyday life and still do to this day. When I'm with my friends, we always manage to slip at least one vine into our conversation. So, with the fans and viewers, Vine was still alive. For the vine makers, however, that is a different story. Some viners try to relive their glory days and post throwbacks to what was, while some have moved onto bigger and better things. Two such viners that have done this are Demetrius Harmon, formerly known as MeechOnMars, and Angelo Zeigler, formerly known as Dope Island. Demetrius has gone on to raise awareness for depression and suicide prevention, with his "You Matter" Hoodies.  Beyond that, however, both Demetrius and Angelo have continued to make videos together and post them on Twitter and Youtube. For their videos, they take common occurrences or well known moments in history/mythology and put their own spin on it. For example, some of their videos are about Adam and Eve, Michael Myers, Noah's Ark, Salem Witch Trials, and The Day After the Purge, to name a few. My personal favorites are The First Person to think of Eating Eggs and The First Time Someone had Twins. I'll talk about them in depth here but I'll also attach the links in the comments if you want to watch them. For The First Person to Think of Eating Eggs, it starts off with Angelo looking out the window at a chicken (Demetrius) just walking around. Angelo and human Demetrius then go outside to see the chicken. Angelo and chicken Demetrius start talking when Angelo takes one of chicken Demetrius' eggs, to which chicken Demetrius gets very mad about, saying he just birthed them and that the eggs are his kids, to which Angelo responds that his kids are breakfast lunch and dinner. Chicken Demetrius is still upset saying that these are his kids and how would they like it if he came and took their kids after giving birth, to which human Demetrius and Angelo say that he can't do that because he's a chicken and that they can eat him too if they want. Angelo thinks this is a great idea and then chicken Demetrius says they can have the kids and he can just make more. In The First Time Someone had kids, Angelo is the doctor and the mom, while Demetrius is the dad and the two twins. It starts out with the mom in labor giving birth to the first son. The mom is trying to push, so the dad and doctor tell her to keep pushing like a push-up. The first baby comes out, and everyone is excited until the baby says he has his friend with him too. The mom then says she feels another one coming and the doctor checks, confirming that there is another one. He is surprised as this has never been done before and then for the rest of the video thinks about how he is the first person to do this. The dad is confused and angry, saying he only did it for one. The second son and the mom get mad at the dad because the dad didn't want both kids.  A really funny part is when he whips out the receipt, saying one nut equals one kid. The second son asks to see the receipt, to which he then says, "I can't read. It ends with Demetrius as the dad saying he can't do this because he just got a new horse that got no keys. These two videos, as well as their other videos, are brimming with incongruity humor and benign violation. The incongruity humor is present when they both use the typical storyline and add their own spin on it to modernize it, such as when the dad and doctor tell the mom to keep pushing like a push-up. Benign violation humor is present throughout the entirety of the videos as they made their custom dialogue to portray how it could have happened. These videos are wildly popular and funny, beloved by many because of its relatability and familiar content. Most importantly, it shows the pure humor that we need in this day and age.

  2. This made me want to go back and watch all the best vine moments on YouTube. It's cool to see how famous viners have worked their way up to do bigger and better things.

  3. It occurs to me that humor such as this works a lot like Hobbes's myth of the state of nature. They are both thought experiments that ask the question: what was it like when someone first figured out the nature of x. In Hobbes's case, he suggests that someone sat down and said, oh we should all band together and decide to stop killing each other because that's much better than this terrible life, which is nasty and brutish and short. There's always a certain incongruity to imagining the customs and norms of our world as things that someone sat down and decided to follow. In reality, it does not work like this, but it is both amusing and thought provoking to think in these terms.
