Jennifer’s body: I never thought about the movie Jennifer’s Body as a comedy, but after reading the lead blog post I can see how it is actually a parody of comedic films centered around high school relationships. The iconic movie Mean Girls, because it focuses on the cruelty of teenage girls and high school dynamics, displays certain tv/movie tropes which can similarly be found in Jennifer’s body. The classic popular, pretty, and mean teenage girl is displayed through Megan Fox’s character, Jennifer, who turns into a man-eating monster after the night of the concert. Megan displays the characteristics of an Alpha- bitch or queen bee of the high school as almost all the male students within the movie are extremely attracted to her and her as a less adored and unassertive sidekick. As the classic queen bee usually has a friend who obeys whatever they say and is non-confrontational, the movie uses Needy’s character to display the mean girl's passive friend. Her name adds to the overall parody as the sidekick is usually viewed as needy by the mean girl. After taking these aspects into consideration, I started to see how the movie is actually comedic despite the gore. Jennifer takes the trope of a mean girl to a whole new level as she is literally evil, killing and eating people in order to survive. While the mean girl in most teen movies has gained her place as the queen bee by mentally destroying others, Jennifer actually kills people in order to maintain her physique and therefore her popularity. This approach presents benign violation as well as incongruity as we normally would not place the mean girl as legitimately evil. I now want to re-watch the movie with the new viewpoint of the film as a comedic parody.
